What the little guy did while I was gone...

Last week was tough. I was in San Fransisco for work. A was home - not with me. I rushed back to the hotel every evening to have some precious skype time before he went to sleep. I really missed holding him before he went to sleep. I missed seeing his smile in the morning. But I knew he was just fine. He was with his daddy. The photos below attest to the great time he had without me :)

However, I must admit, I loved the happy squeal he gave when he first saw me come through the door. I sure did miss my little guy.

What's in a name?

Naming your child is a very pressure filled situation. It's shapes their live in untold ways. Your name has an indelible effect on who you are. Talk about needing to make a good decision.

I knew I wanted a strong name. I knew I wanted one that had a spelling that wasn't easily confused (like mine). I also read this intriguing article about how students with names earlier in the alphabet do better in school (so, of course, I picked a name starting with A...). I also read how people with names that people know makes life much easier. I did a lot of research :)

At the end of the day, however, I chose a name I loved. I loved the way it sounds, I love the full name and the nickname. I love that it has history and that it just fits my little guy. I love that it is his alone in my family (though his middle name is a family name) and that he has a name to grow into. Maybe I love it because I love my son, and I can't separate that now...but that probably means that I made a good decision...right?

DC Monuments

A loved DC...we had a morning to play around. We saw the first cherry blossoms, the new MLK memorial, the FDR memorial and the mall. The Mall was the clear favorite...more space to run then he's ever seen. I loved seeing him smile so much...just wish we had more time!

And of course, I'm excited that we added more National Parks to his repertoire :)

My Favorite Things to Do!

At 14 months, A just went through a huge learning's incredible how much they learn and how quickly.

Right now, his favorite thing in the world...putting tops on things. Yep, he can spend a good half an hour putting the top back on his food packet, or attaching the top of the water bottle, playdoh container...tops, who knew? I love watching his concentration - biting his lip, sticking out his tongue. It is just the cutest thing! He's gotten really good at it too :)

The pictures below are all examples from one literally hours of a day can be taken up with this exciting game. How long can this last?

Enjoy My Messmerized Life!

~ I'd love to introduce you to another wonderful mommy blogger! Please take some time to check out her blog. Many thanks for guest posting! ~

Hi! My name is Stephanie and I'm the face behind My Messmerized Life. I've been married to my husband Rick for almost 6 years and have a 13 month old daughter named Adalyn. My blog is all about my life, from crafting, beginner photography, Pinterest pins turned to real life projects to life with a toddler who cannot keep herself out of trouble, or the toilet!

I love to read and probably spend too much time on my Kindle and not enough time on my blog. Which was actually one of my resolutions that I'm clearly not doing well enough at. I'll be honest, I tend to have a hard time finding topics to write about. I'm connected to a network of really awesome bloggy moms who I try so hard to live up to their blog topics but am no where near experienced yet. What you can often read about on the blog is about crafting, Pinterest, giveaways, etc. but I really created my blog to utilize it as a journal for me to keep my thoughts or every day activities out there to reference back 2 years from now when I can't even remember what it was like to have a child who doesn't speak. I created the blog for me and try to remember each time I post that I'm posting for me and my family. I hope you enjoy reading and really enjoy comments so please leave some!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I couldn't find any green clothes for A today - what a bad precedent to set!

But we did get some good rain to enjoy! A's first...He LOVED it! (This is a happy expression, I swear!)

Away for a week?

Next week I have a work training in San Francisco. All week long. Now, I really love SF. It is an amazing city - and it's been much too long since I've been there! It's walkable (as long as you like hills), great food, culture, atmosphere. I am excited to be staying in a Kimpton hotel (sans goldfish), and to have multiple nights of uninterrupted sleep!

But on the other hand, I am dreading being away from A for that can I leave this face?

I know I have to go for work, and I know that I will enjoy it, but I know that I will miss him so very much. How can I go without bed time snuggles for 5 whole nights? How will I make it through the day without my morning smile or giggle right before bed? Five day of missing hugs and kisses and giggles and smiles.

On the other hand, he is getting so much more independent...not sure he even needs me for bedtime anymore...

Any suggestions on how to make the time go by faster? or even just how to get through the week?

Addicted to apps (what kids love)

Hi! I'm Jessica and my blog home is over at Chaos & Love where I write about family, food and crafts - all the things closest to my heart. I am a working mom to two boys {Joseph, 3, and Luke, 14 months} and wife of a chef. In my spare time, I run a little Etsy shop by the same name as my blog. A big thank you to Mrs. K for letting me share her space for the day.

* * * * *

My three-year-old is an iDevice addict. I should probably be embarrassed to admit that but given the fact that he's MY kid and I am a sucker for all things techy, there wasn't much hope for him. It's been a challenge for us to find the balance between entertaining {for him} and obnoxious {for us}. We have discovered that there are a TON of apps out there for kids, though, and some of them are even entertaining for moms and dads as well.

The most used app in our house BY FAR is The Monster at the End of This Book. If you've never read these books, you definitely should - they are some of my favorite books and the apps bring them to life in an awesome, interactive way. The developer of these apps did such a great job with the details which makes them well worth their somewhat steep cost of $3.99 {although I must admit that I got it for free from one of those Pick of the Week cards from Starbucks}.
I love that you can put your kids' names in the title of the book like you would a paper one. It makes it fun for me even if my boys aren't old enough to get it yet. Every once in a while, I go in and change it up a bit. I'm easily amused, obviously.
Each screen of the app is a different page of the book. My favorite is this one that starts out with Grover yelling, "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" and waving his arms around. Joseph will do this randomly {including the flailing arms} and it makes me laugh every single time.
This is Joseph's favorite page. Grover builds up the brick wall and then you can touch the screen to break it down. When he first started playing with this app, he said to me, "Can I break this, Mommy?" I had no idea what he was talking about so I said no. Ever since then, that's the required answer any time he asks me that question.
We seriously love this app and its sequel, Another Monster at the End of this Book. Even Luke gets excited when he sees them and that's big since things hold his attention for about half a second before he moves on. And even more impressive, they hold my attention. They're well worth the cost for the hours of entertainment they provide for everyone in the family.
I'd love to hear what you think of the app if you try it or already have it.

Dreaming of the Canadian Rockies

We are contemplating vacationing in the Canadian Rockies this fall. So I started to do some research - wow are the photos stunning! We've been trying to go for years, and things kept getting in the way. But I think we are serious about it this year. I'm excited about some hiking, snow, alpine lakes, moose....

I pinned some inspiration to share :)

Crazier than Normal at Crazy Casa K

Things are normally a bit crazy at our house (but what is normal anyway?). Two working parents, a very active 13-month old and a dog that thinks he's human makes for a busy place.

The next few weeks are going to be even crazier! So some of the amazing and talented mommy-bloggers that I have met through this adventure I call my blog, have agreed to write some guest posts for me. I really hope you enjoy them and take some time to check out their blogs too.

A big thank you to my fellow bloggers that are helping me out!

Travel Town - LA

On a whim last Sunday, we decided to go to Travel Town in LA. On a side note, Every time I decide to go to Griffith Park it ends up being over 90 degrees! My husband loves trains, so we take every opportunity we can to indoctrinate A into the world of trains...

We also enjoyed a lunch picnic in Griffith park - lots of picnic tables available...

His rosy cheeks attest to the heat - he scarfed down an entire adult sized water bottle, on top of his sippy of milk! He loved the train ride (and trying to pull the person' hair in front of us). After we got off the train, he wanted to run after it and wave at the folks as they took their turn...too cute :)

He also really enjoyed the "big" trains. Touching the gears, the numbers, looking out windows. Paradise for an inquisitive 13-month old!

There must always be hope...

What Cancer Cannot Do

Author: Unknown
Cancer is so limited...
It cannot cripple love.
It cannot shatter hope.
It cannot corrode faith.
It cannot eat away peace.
It cannot destroy confidence.
It cannot kill friendship.
It cannot shut out memories.
It cannot silence courage.
It cannot reduce eternal life.
It cannot quench the Spirit.

I love my freckles. My grandma told me they were kisses from angels :)

I hope A gets lots of adorable angel kisses too!

Meal Planning - a new way to save recipes

I am constantly tearing recipes from magazines. They look so yummy. Before I had A, I managed to organize them into a binder, and occasionally I'd become motivated and make a meal plan for the week. I'd try a few recipes, which were generally really good, I'd try to keep the recipes in a safe place to make again, but I was not always successful.

Since I've had A, this has been even less successful. I continue to rip recipes from magazines. But that's where it ends. But in my exploration of pinterest, I realized, my problems may be over...I can "pin" recipes, keep them for later, and once I find a little more time, even maybe try them!

Some of my favorites...
